Photo Requirements for a Good Smile Simulation (Lighting, Angle, Lips)

A good smile simulation starts with a good photo: even, front-on lighting, a straight-on angle at the patient's eye level, and a relaxed smile with the teeth clearly visible. The engine can only work with what the camera captured, so thirty seconds of care at capture is the difference between a believable preview and a distracting one. Here is the practical checklist, the common mistakes, and how the photo itself is handled.

What makes a good photo for smile simulation?

Three things matter more than the camera: light, angle, and the smile itself. You do not need a DSLR — a recent phone or tablet is plenty — but you do need the teeth well-lit, the face square to the lens, and a natural expression. Get those right and even a modest device produces a preview a patient trusts. Get them wrong and the best engine in the world is guessing. The good news for a busy clinic is that none of this needs a photographer: it is a thirty-second routine any team member can learn, repeatable across every operatory, and it pays for itself the first time a patient says “that actually looks like me.”

How should you light the shot?

Aim for soft, even light hitting the front of the face. Position the patient facing a window or a ring light rather than with a bright light behind them, which throws the smile into shadow. Avoid a single harsh overhead operatory light, which carves dark gaps between the teeth and confuses shade. If you can see every tooth clearly with your own eyes at the angle you are shooting, the camera can too. A phone's flash usually makes things worse, not better — it flattens the smile and blows out the front teeth — so prefer steady ambient light and turn the flash off unless the room is genuinely dark.

What angle and framing work best?

Shoot straight on, camera at the patient's eye level, with the head neither tilted up nor down. Fill the frame with the lower face — roughly nose to chin — so the smile is large in the image without cropping the corners of the mouth. An off-axis or chin-up shot distorts proportions and makes the simulated result harder to trust. Straight, level, and close is the whole rule.

How should the lips and teeth be positioned?

You want a relaxed but full smile that shows the upper teeth clearly — the natural smile the patient would give a friend, held a beat longer. For cases where the incisal edges and gum line matter, a gentle lip retraction (fingers or a cheek retractor) gives the cleanest capture. Ask the patient to keep the lips soft rather than tense; a forced grin changes the tooth display and the framing you are simulating. A useful trick is to have the patient say a word that opens the smile naturally, then hold it, rather than commanding “smile” and capturing the stiff result that follows. For whitening and shade conversations, a natural smile is usually enough; for veneer and edge work, take one relaxed smile and one gently retracted view so you can show the patient both the everyday look and the detail the lab will work to.

What are the most common capture mistakes?

A quick checklist catches almost every avoidable problem before you generate.

  1. Backlight — a window behind the patient; move them to face it.
  2. Tilt — chin up or head turned; reset to straight and level.
  3. Too far — the smile is tiny in the frame; step in.
  4. Motion blur — steady the device or brace your elbows.
  5. Tense lips — ask for a relaxed smile, then shoot.

Once the photo is good, it flows straight into the consult sequence in fitting previews into your consult workflow.

How does photo quality affect what you can promise?

A good photo makes a preview more believable, but it never turns a preview into a guarantee — and it is worth being clear-eyed about that distinction. Better light and angle reduce the engine's guesswork, so the result better reflects the patient's real anatomy; they do not let the image predict how enamel will take a shade or how tissue will settle. That is why every preview, no matter how crisp the capture, still carries its label: a visualization aid, not a guarantee. Treat photo quality as a way to make an honest preview clearer, not as a way to make a bolder promise. The cleaner the input, the more the conversation can focus on the plan instead of on artefacts in the picture.

How is the patient's photo handled?

Because the input is a photo of a person, patients across Jordan, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia reasonably ask what happens to it. Our position is specific and written down: Your photo is processed transiently to create the preview and is never stored by Smileproof. Our AI provider may retain inputs for a limited period (up to 55 days) solely for abuse monitoring under its data-processing terms. It is never used to train models.
