IPS e.max opacity codes — HT, LT, MO, and HO — tell the ceramist how much of the prepared tooth underneath will show through the final restoration, which is why the same “shade” can come back glowing and natural or flat and grey depending on the ingot chosen. Understanding the codes helps a dentist communicate better with the lab, even though the ceramist makes the final ingot decision. Here is a plain-language, chairside translation of what each opacity means and when it is the right choice.

What are IPS e.max opacity codes?

IPS e.max is Ivoclar's lithium disilicate glass-ceramic, and it comes in ingots and blocks of differing translucency so the ceramist can control how much the underlying stump colour influences the result. The codes — High Translucency (HT), Low Translucency (LT), Medium Opacity (MO), and High Opacity (HO), plus specialty value and opal ingots — run from “lets light and substrate through” to “blocks the substrate out.” They are not shades; they are a separate axis. A restoration's final colour is the interaction of the ingot's shade, its opacity, and the stump underneath, which is exactly why the stump shade and the opacity code have to be decided together.

When does a ceramist reach for HT (High Translucency)?

HT is the most translucent option, prized for the lifelike depth and “chameleon” effect it borrows from the tooth underneath. Ceramists reach for it when the substrate is favourable — a light, healthy stump — and the goal is natural vitality rather than masking: thin veneers, inlays and onlays, and monolithic restorations where the underlying colour is an asset, not a problem. HT looks stunning over the right stump and disappointing over the wrong one, because whatever is beneath it will read through. Its beauty and its risk are the same property: honesty to the substrate.

When does LT (Low Translucency) make sense?

LT is the workhorse. It is more opaque than HT, giving more inherent value and brightness and a gentle ability to mask a mildly discoloured stump, while still looking natural. Ceramists reach for LT for a great many single crowns and veneers, especially where the stump is slightly off but not severely dark, and where the patient wants a bright, controlled result. If HT is a pane of tinted glass and HO is a wall, LT is a frosted panel — it lets some character through while keeping the substrate in check. For a large share of everyday cosmetic cases, LT is the safe, versatile default.

What is MO (Medium Opacity) for?

MO ingots are opaque enough to serve as substructures or copings over moderately discoloured preparations, then veneered with layering porcelain to build the final aesthetics. A ceramist reaches for MO when the stump is discoloured enough that a translucent monolithic restoration would read grey or dark, but the case does not demand maximum masking. MO buys control: it establishes a neutral, opaque foundation the ceramist can build colour onto predictably. It trades some of the natural depth of HT and LT for the certainty of not fighting a compromised substrate, which on the right case is exactly the right trade.

When is HO (High Opacity) the right call?

HO is the maximum-masking option, reserved for the hardest substrates: severely discoloured stumps, non-vital teeth that have darkened, metal posts and cores, or amalgam-stained dentine. Here a translucent ingot would let the ugliness through no matter how skilful the layering, so the ceramist starts from an opaque HO foundation and builds the aesthetics on top. HO is not about beauty in itself — it is about giving the ceramist a clean canvas over a dirty substrate. Choosing it when the stump demands it is the difference between a restoration that looks alive and one that looks grey at the neck.

How does the stump shade drive the opacity choice?

Directly and decisively. The darker the prepared tooth, the more opacity the ceramist needs to prevent it reading through. A light stump can carry HT; a moderately discoloured one points to LT or MO; a severely dark stump or a metal core forces HO. This is why sending the stump shade — ideally photographed against a die-shade reference — is not optional: without it, the ceramist is choosing opacity blind, and a wrong guess is a value-and-brightness remake. Who chooses the ingot — the dentist or the ceramist?

The ceramist chooses, informed by what the dentist sends. The dentist's job is to supply the inputs that make a good choice possible: the target shade, the stump shade, the material request, and the patient's approved look. The ceramist then selects the opacity that will hit that target over that substrate. A dentist who understands the codes communicates better and second-guesses less, but the ingot decision is craft, and it belongs at the bench. Trying to dictate the exact ingot from the chair, without the ceramist's daily feel for how each behaves, usually helps no one — supply the inputs, trust the expertise.

Where does a smile preview fit into all this?

A preview sets the aesthetic target — the brightness and character the patient approved — so the dentist and ceramist are aiming at the same result before the opacity conversation even starts. What a preview does not and must not do is pick an ingot or specify opacity; it is a visualization aid, not a guarantee, not a materials selector. It carries approved design intent, and the technical decision about how to achieve that look over this particular stump stays with the clinician and the ceramist. Used together, the preview aligns everyone on the destination while the shade and stump documentation determine the route.
